The TCS New York City Marathon is a 5-Borough race set on November 1, 2026. Help Sarah Hannah Oohweereh Peters reach her goal of $4,000 and join her in supporting the New York Genealogical & Biographical Society, helping preserve, document, and share family history across New York State.
SARAH'S NEW YORK STORY
My "New York story" is my history. I’m Bear Clan, Mohawk Nation and member of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg. Lenapehoking, or New York City, has always been Native land. As an Indigenous woman living here, I carry a relationship to this place that predates Ellis Island narratives. I was raised understanding both the celebrated history of immigration and industry and the quieter truth of displacement, resilience, and survival that defines Indigenous presence in this state. My connection to New York history is not symbolic; it is lived—walking the same waterways my ancestors once stewarded, honoring the land beneath concrete and steel, and insisting on visibility in a city that often forgets who was here first. New York is described as a gateway for those arriving to build new lives, but for Indigenous people it is also a homeland we have fought to remain connected to, protect, and remember.
ABOUT DIGITIZE NEW YORK
Your donation will support the NYG&B's statewide Digitize New York initiative to preserve at-risk historical records and make them freely available online.
Many record holders, including historical societies, churches, town hall offices, and others hold at-risk documents they are unable to digitize themselves. Through Digitize New York, organizations can either submit their records for preservation at one of the NYG&B’s Digitization Centers or request a digitization kit that empowers them to preserve and upload records at their own sites—at no cost to participating organizations. Learn more here.
