Summary

Before settling in Michigan or Wisconsin, many ancestors passed through New York, leaving behind records that can unlock their earlier history. New York served as a major gateway for westward migration, as families moved along the Erie Canal, across the Great Lakes, and via overland routes into the Old Northwest Territory. This course explores those migration paths and the records that document those families. You'll learn strategies for tracing Midwestern ancestors backward to their New York origins. Whether your ancestor's birthplace is simply listed as "New York" or you suspect a New York connection you haven't confirmed, this session will help move your search forward.
